Kangas, Jones score 19 each in Oakland’s win over S. Dakota St.
ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP)—Erik Kangas and Johnathan Jones scored 19 points each as Oakland defeated South Dakota State 78-68 Saturday.
Oakland (12-10, 7-4 Summit League) has won three in a row, while the Jackrabbits (7-15, 2-9) have won only once since Jan. 5.
Kangas, who hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left in Thursday’s 77-74 win over North Dakota State, hit five triples in seven tries on Saturday. Jones added nine assists and seven rebounds to his scoring total.
Kai Williams led South Dakota State with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Garrett Callahan added 15.
Both teams struggled in the first half, combining for 19 turnovers, but Oakland pulled away to a six-point lead in the final moments of the period. Kangas had 10 points in the half, including a four-point play that keyed Oakland’s rally.
Oakland kept its momentum after the intermission, quickly moving out to a 48-38 advantage. The Jackrabbits pulled to within 51-46, but Kangas hit three more 3-pointers, the last from 27 feet, to derail the comeback.
The Golden Grizzlies appeared to be in control until the final two minutes, when Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers to narrow the margin to 72-68. After an Oakland miss, Williams got a chance to make it a one-point game, but his shot bounced off the rim.
South Dakota State was forced to foul, and the Golden Grizzlies clinched the game from the free-throw line.
