McDaniel’s 18 points leads Sam Houston St. over UTA, 73-57
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP)—Shamir McDaniel’s 18 points helped Sam Houston State outlast Texas-Arlington 73-57 Wednesday night.
McDaniel led four players in double figures for the Bearkats (16-3, 4-2 Southland). Ryan Bright scored 14 points and was the game-high rebounder with 17. Reggie Rawlins scored 16 points and Jeremy Thomas added 11 for Sam Houston.
Texas-Arlington (14-5, 4-3) were led by Anthony Vereen’s 22 points. He was the only player in double figures for the Mavericks.
Texas-Arlington jumped out to a 17-6 lead, but Sam Houston State scored the next 13 points. After four more lead changes, Ryan Bright’s 3-pointer with 3:52 left in the first half gave the Bearkats a 27-25 advantage and the lead for good.
Texas-Arlington was without starting forward Larry Posey, who made the trip but did not play because of an undisclosed illness.
The Mavericks hit only two of 15 3-pointers, while the Bearkats were 8-of-26 from behind the arc.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Mavericks.
