Mendez scores 23 points in Georgia State win
ATLANTA (AP)—Leonard Mendez scored 23 points, hitting five 3-pointers, to lead Georgia State to a 64-58 victory over Drexel on Wednesday night.
The Dragons (9-13, 2-8 Colonial Athletic Association) took a 49-42 lead with 9:10 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Tramayne Hawthorne, who finished with 17 points.
But the Panthers (6-14, 3-7) answered with a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to claim a 56-53 lead on Kevin Lott’s jumper. Mendez led the spurt with 10 points—connecting on a layup, a jumper and two shots from beyond the arc.
Justin Billingslea had 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks for Georgia State, which has won consecutive games for the first time this season after losing four straight.
Drexel’s Scott Rodgers had 11 points.
