Trent Meacham scores 18 points to lift Illinois past Northwestern 70-37

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP)—Trent Meacham had 18 points to help Illinois defeat Northwestern 70-37 and snap a two-game losing streak Sunday night at Assembly Hall.

Illinois (10-11, 2-6 Big Ten), losers of seven of its last nine games, shot 54.2 percent and made eight 3-pointers to end its skid. Rodney Alexander and Demetri McCamey each added eight points for the Illini.

Michael Thompson led Northwestern with 13 points and Sterling Williams added nine points and had three rebounds.

Illinois’ defense limited Northwestern’s leading scorer Kevin Coble to 3 points and 3 rebounds. The 6-foot-9 forward entered the game averaging 16.7 points per game.

Northwestern (6-11, 0-7), which has lost seven of its last eight games, made its first shot of the game and then missed its next 11 of 12. Aside from an 11-2 run more than midway through the first half, the Wildcats were never able to get anything going.

The Illini led 31-18 at halftime after shooting 58.3 percent from the field on 14-of-24 shooting compared to the Wildcats’ 35 percent. Illinois also grabbed 17 rebounds to Northwestern
