Clutch free throws give Oral Roberts a 80-75 edge over Southern Utah
CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP)—Robert Jarvis scored a career-high 34 points and made five free throws in the final 18 seconds, leading Oral Roberts to an 80-75 win over Southern Utah on Saturday night.
Jarvis went 6-for-9 from 3-point range and shot 64 percent from the field for the Golden Eagles (14-5, 9-0 Summit).
Adam Liberty scored 18 points for Oral Roberts, while Shawn King had 13 rebounds.
The Eagles perfect start in league play is a record dating back to the Summit League’s origin as the Mid-Continent Conference.
Geoff Payne scored 27 points to lead Southern Utah (5-15, 3-6). Tyler Quinney scored 14 points off the bench, while David Marek added 11.
Southern Utah shot 51 percent from the field and out-rebounded the much taller Eagles 35-32.
Marek’s 3-pointer from the right corner got the Thunderbirds within a basket, 75-73, with 47 seconds to play.
After an Oral Roberts timeout, Jarvis was fouled with 18 seconds to go. He hit the first free throw but missed the second. Davis Baker rebounded for Southern Utah and threw the ball away.
Jarvis clinched it with four more free throws in the last 11 seconds.
