Merritt leads all with 19 points in Samford win over Austin Peay
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—Joe Ross Merritt scored a game-high 19 points to lead Samford to a 63-49 victory over Austin Peay on Saturday.
Samford (9-11, 6-6 Ohio Valley Conference) came out strong and after trailing by one point in the first few minutes of the game, took the lead and kept it the rest of the way.
Austin Peay (13-8, 9-2) was never able to overcome its slow start and didn’t score its first field goal until 13:11 in the first half.
The Governors struggled with 5-of-17 shooting (29.4 percent) first half while Samford went 15-of-25 for a 60 percent showing as the Bulldogs built a 39-20 halftime advantage.
Trey Montgomery had 17 points for Samford and Josh Bedwell added 16.
Derek Wright scored the most points for Austin Peay with 17. He was the only player on his team to score in double digits.
