Smith scores 26 to lead Morgan State in 69-51 victory over Howard
WASHINGTON (AP)—Jamar Smith scored 26 points to lead Morgan State in a 69-51 win against Howard on Saturday.
Marquise Kately added 14 points for Morgan State (10-8, 5-1 MEAC).
Randy Hampton scored 16 and Eugene Myatt had 11 for Howard (4-15, 1-4), which has now lost 11 of its last 12 games. Hampton scored eight of his points at the free throw line, going 8-for-10.
Morgan State never trailed in the game, although they didn’t take complete control until the second half. Leading 29-23 at halftime, the Bears opened the second half with a 16-2 run.
Morgan State eventually built its lead to as many as 22 points, but Howard made one late push. The Bison cut the lead to nine points, 55-46, with 5 1/2 minutes left. Morgan State then scored the game’s next 10 points to end Howard’s comeback hopes.
Howard had 20 turnovers—leading to 25 Morgan State points—to Morgan State’s 10.
