Montgomery has 20 to lead IUPUI over Oakland 82-69
INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Austin Montgomery scored 20 points and Jon Avery had 17 off the bench as IUPUI beat Oakland 82-69 in a Summit League game Thursday night.
The Jaguars (14-5, 6-2) outshot the Golden Grizzles, shooting 64.7 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3-point range. They beat them inside, too, outrebounding Oakland 31-27 and outscoring them in the paint 42-22 in a game that featured five ties and 10 lead changes.
While his team hustled on the court, coach Ron Hunter watched barefoot from the sidelines to raise awareness for needy children in Africa.
George Hill added 17 points and seven assists for IUPUI. Gary Patterson scored 14 and Billy Pettiford had 13.
The Golden Grizzlies (9-10, 4-4) shot just 42.1 percent from the field and 31 percent from 3-point range. But they scored 12 points off free throws while the Jaguars managed seven.
Erik Kangas led Oakland with 20. Derick Nelson had 12 and Johnathon Jones 10.
