Laing’s 22 points lead Seton Hall 88-75 over Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP)—Brian Laing had 22 points and Jamar Nutter had 19 as Seton Hall won its third straight game and first Big East road game in two years, 88-75 over Providence.

Weyinmi Efejuku had a game-high 23 points and Jeff Xavier had 16 for Providence (12-6, 3-3) which lost for the time at home this season after eight wins. The Friars also had their three-game league win streak snapped.

Larry Davis (13) and Eugene Harvey (10) were also in double figures for Seton Hall

The Pirates (13-6, 3-3) didn’t look as if they would come close to matching their league-best 82 points. They trailed 26-11 in the first half after making just 3 of 11 shots, then almost matched the Friars’ rapid start with a 26-12 closing run in the final nine minutes of the half. Nutter contributed 12 points.

Providence clung to a 38-37 halftime lead.

Seton Hall took a 70-54 lead in the second half on a 21-6 run over six minutes. They made four 3-pointers, including two by Jeremy Hazell. The Pirates maintained at least a dougle-digit lead the rest of the way.

Seton Hall had a big edge in several categories, shooting 28 of 56 (50 percent) to just 38 percent for the Friars (23 of 60). Seton Hall also made 8 of 16 3-point attempts while Providence was just 6 of 23. Providence made only 23 of 35 attempted free throws, while Seton Hall made 24 of 27.
