Cal St-Bakersfield 80, Long Beach St 77
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP)—Terrence Johns scored 20 points to lead Cal State Bakersfield to a 80-77 overtime victory over Long Beach State in non a conference game Wednesday.
The Roadrunners (7-13) have won four of five and won their fourth consecutive road game as they defeated the 49’ers for the first time school’s history. Long Beach State (4-13) has dropped seven of eight fell to 4-3 at home.
Johns scored five points in the OT, including a basket with 56 seconds remaining. Donavan Morris’ basket with 41 seconds left cut Bakersfield’s lead to 79-77 but the 49’ers failed to score the rest of the ball and turned the ball over with 9 seconds remaining.
Donavan Bragg added a free throw in the final seconds to seal the victory.
Trent Blakley scored 19 points for the Roadrunners, including a 3-pointer with 6.7 left in regulation to force OT. Demarcus Hall added 14 points for Bakersfield.
Morris scored 24 of his game-high 27 points for the 49’ers, who committed 17 turnovers.
Brice Gallow Cornell Williams added 10 points a piece for Long Beach State, who outrebounded the Roadrunners 39-34 for the game.
Midway through the first half Long Beach States’ defense tightened up and held the Roadrunners scoreless for four and one-half minutes.
The 49’ers took advantage and moved ahead.
Darnell Porter’s basket gave Long Beach State their biggest lead of the half, 32-22 23:18 remaining. The 49’ers shot 45 percent and outrebounded Bakersfield, 23-13, in the first half and led at the break 34-27. Hall scored 10 points in the opening half to lead the roadrunners.
