South Carolina State edges Howard 60-58
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP)—Jason Johnson had 13 points and seven rebounds and South Carolina State held off Howard 60-58 on Monday.
Carrio Bennett added 11 points and Everett Spencer hit a free throw with 17.9 second left to give the Bulldogs (6-12, 2-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a three-point lead.
Howard (4-14, 1-3) had a chance to tie, but the Bison couldn’t get a 3-point shot off before Randy Hampton was fouled with 2.4 seconds left.
Hampton hit the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, but Howard could not get the rebound before the buzzer sounded, giving South Carolina State its third win in 10 games.
Freshman Adam Walker had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Hampton scored 12 points for the Bison, who have dropped 10 of their past 11 games.
