Maxey leads Jackson St. to 69-57 win over Texas Southern
JACKSON, Miss. (AP)—Grant Maxey had 28 points and 10 rebounds to help Jackson State end a two-game losing streak and beat Texas Southern 69-57 on Monday night.
Jackson State (6-13, 4-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) outscored Texas Southern 26-4 during an 8-minute stretch to take a 30-10 lead with 6:48 left in the first half.
Maxey, who scored 21 points in the first half, had 10 during the run as Jackson State built a 43-28 lead at halftime.
Texas Southern (4-14, 3-2) made just 11 of 38 shots in the second half, but managed to pull within 64-56 with 1:28 remaining on a 3-pointer from David Burrell. But Jackson State connected on 5 of 7 free throws to seal the win.
Darrion Griffin added 10 points for Jackson State, which outrebounded Texas Southern 46-33. Texas Southern, which lost its second straight game, got 17 points from Burrell.
The Tigers shot just 30 percent for the game.
