West leads Hampton past South Carolina State, 82-76

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP)—Rashad West scored 21 points and Hampton remained unbeaten in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a 82-76 win over South Carolina State on Saturday.

Matthew Pilgrim added 16 points for the Pirates (9-6, 4-0 MEAC), who raced out to a 15-point first-half lead and withstood a second-half surge from the Bulldogs (5-12, 1-2).

Jason Flagler scored a career-high 27 points and Carrio Bennett added 17 for South Carolina State, which got within 62-58 on Bennett’s 3 with 8:22 left.

Pilgrim’s tip-in sparked an 11-5 run that put Hampton back in control.

The Pirates hit 33 of 44 free throws in their fourth straight win.
