Marcus Allen helps Jacksonville defeat North Florida 67-56
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Marcus Allen scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season in leading Jacksonville to a 67-56 win over North Florida Saturday.
Allen connected on 6-of-9 shots including just his fifth 3-point basket of the year on his first shot of the game.
When North Florida pulled to within three points at 42-39 with 11 minutes left in the game, Allen started a 14-4 Jacksonville run with a three-point play. Guard Ben Smith finished the surge with another three-point play.
The 14-4 Jacksonville spurt gave the Dolphins a 53-43 lead with just over four minutes remaining. Jacksonville led by at least nine points the rest of the game.
Jacksonville (9-8, 5-0 Atlantic Sun Conference) hit 42 percent from the floor and was only 66 percent at the foul line, but the Dolphins’ strong defense limited North Florida to just 35 percent from the field and forced the Ospreys into 18 turnovers.
The win gave Jacksonville its first 5-0 start in league play since the 1986-87 season when the Dolphins won their first five games in the Sun Belt Conference.
Tom Hammonds and Chris Timberlake led North Florida (1-16, 0-5) with 17 and 13 points respectively, but they needed 30 attempts to make 10 baskets between them.
