Sam Houston St. rallies to get win against McNeese State
LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP)—Shamir McDaniel scored 14 points and DeLuis Ramirez added 13 as Sam Houston State claimed a 64-49 victory Thursday over McNeese State in Southland Conference action.
Sam Houston (14-2, 3-1) also got 11 points from Ashton Mitchell but McNeese held the team’s leading scorer, Ryan Bright, to just five points.
The Cowboys (7-7, 1-1) had the advantage in the first half when they rolled up a 14-2 lead and didn’t allow a Bearkat basket until almost four minutes had lapsed in the game. McNeese would lead the rest of the half and take a 22-20 edge into the intermission.
But in the second half, it was all Sam Houston. The Bearkats took the lead for good at 30-29 with 14:42 left on a free throw by Ashton Mitchell and went on to the win—Sam Houston’s first in the last four meetings between the two teams.
McNeese State’s John Ford led all scorers with 16 points, including three 3-pointers late in the game. The Cowboys’ Kleon Penn had 11 rebounds and four blocked shots on the night.
