Hodges’ 3-pointer gives UMBC 85-85 win over Hartford
CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP)—Brian Hodges converted a 3-pointer from the left wing as time expired and Maryland-Baltimore County rallied for an 86-85 victory over Hartford on Wednesday night.
UMBC (12-6, 4-1 America East) inbounded the ball along the left sideline with 3.6 seconds left after each team had taken a time out. Hodges took Darryl Proctor’s pass, faked a move to the basket and pulled back before launching the game-winning shot, his sixth 3-pointer of the night.
Reserve Warren McLendon led Hartford (8-10, 2-1) with a career-high 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Joe Zeglinski added a career-best 25 points, including a go-ahead, 10-foot jumper that put the Hawks up 85-83 with 28.3 seconds left.
Hodges scored 24 points for the Retrievers, who have won four of five. Proctor added 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Ray Barbosa had 13 points.
The Retrievers used four points by Proctor—two free throws and a twisting scoop layup—to go up 78-77 with 2:53 remaining. After McLendon and Proctor traded a pair of foul shots apiece, McLendon’s jump-hook gave the Hawks an 81-80 lead with 2:03 left.
Hodges had a chance to restore UMBC’s lead, but lost the ball out of bounds on a right-side, 3-point attempt with 1:39 to go. Two more free throws by McLendon with 1:24 remaining put the Hawks ahead 83-80. But Barbosa tied the game with a long 3-pointer from the left wing.
Hartford shot 16-for-25 from the field in the second half, but UMBC knocked down nine 3-pointers, finishing 14-for-245 from beyond the arc.
Zeglinski had 14 first-half points and Hartford closed the opening 20 minutes on a 15-8 run en route to a 41-38 halftime lead.
