Murphy scores 18 as Spartans beat Eagles
NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—Tony Murphy hit six crucial free throws down the stretch and finished with 21 points as Norfolk State defeated Coppin State 65-60 Saturday night.
The Spartans (5-8, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) broke open a close game with a 13-2 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 33-23 lead at the break.
Norfolk State continued to pour it on early in the second half, stretching the lead to 49-28 on Murphy’s 3-pointer with 13:31 left. But the Eagles (3-12, 0-2) rallied, cutting the margin to 57-56 on Tywain McKee’s 3-pointer with 3:12 remaining.
Murphy sank six consecutive foul shots over the next 2:26 to build the lead to 63-56 with 21 seconds left, and the Eagles could get no closer than four the rest of the way.
Murphy was only 4-of-15 from the field but was perfect on 10 free-throw attempts.
Corey Lyons added 12 points and Michael DeLoach scored 10 for the Spartans.
McKee led Coppin State with 19 points and Antwan Harrison scored 17.
