Kingsley’s 17 lead SFA over SE La; neither team shoots well
HAMMOND, La. (AP)—Matt Kingsley had 17 points Saturday as Stephen F. Austin beat Southeastern Louisiana 48-45.
Gerald Fonzie made three of five 3-point attempts and 13 points for SFA (13-2, 1-1 Southland).
The Lumberjacks never trailed after Nick Shaw’s jumper put them ahead 6-4, and held a 28-21 halftime lead over the Lions (9-6, 1-1).
Patrick Sullivan had 17 points and 10 rebounds, but was the only player to score more than five points for the Southeastern.
The Lions had a chance to tie after SFA’s Josh Alexander, who had a game-high 11 rebounds, missed a 3-point shot with the score 47-45 and less than a minute left.
But after a Southeastern timeout, Kevyn Green missed a 13-footer along the right baseline.
Fonzie picked up the rebound and was fouled with 7.0 left. He sank the second shot. Chris Cyprian’s 3-pointer at the buzzer was long.
Southeastern hit only 33.3 percent from the field (16-48), and made only 8 of 27 field goals in the second half (29.6 percent).
SFA was did little better at 37.8 percent (17-45) for the game.
