Watson scores 22 as Portland beats Pepperdine 82-78
MALIBU, Calif. (AP)—Sherrard Watson scored 22 points and Nik Raivio had 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists as Portland beat Pepperdine 82-78 Saturday night in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.
Raivio got hot in the second half, scoring 12, while Ethan Niedermeyer scored 14 of his 16 in the first half for the Pilots (6-10).
Niedermeyer had four of Portland’s 10 3-pointers and the Pilots out-rebounded the Waves 43-32.
Tyrone Shelley had 23 points, Jason Walberg and Rico Tucker scored 14 apiece and Malcolm Thomas grabbed 12 rebounds for Pepperdine (6-11), which has lost five of six.
Pepperdine used a 9-0 run to take its first lead with 12:01 left.
The lead switched hands three times, then Portland went on an 8-2 run to pull away and built a nine-point lead with 1:17 to The Pilots opened the first half with an 8-0 run and closed it with a 6-0 run. They led 39-30 at halftime.
