Jarvis scores 20 to lead Oral Roberts past Oakland, Mich 66-60
ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP)—Robert Jarvis scored 20 points, including an off-balance 3-pointer with 1:11 to play, as Oral Roberts beat Oakland 66-60 Saturday.
It was the first matchup between the schools since the Golden Eagles (10-5, 5-0 Summit League) beat Oakland (9-8, 4-2) in the final Mid-Continent Conference championship game in March. The conference changed several members and its name during the offseason.
Oral Roberts led 59-56 when Johnathan Jones tipped the ball away from Jarvis. Two Oakland players had chances to pick up the ball, but failed, and Jarvis scooped it up and hit long 3-pointer.
Jones made it 62-58 with a layup and forced a turnover on the other end, but the Golden Grizzlies couldn’t hit a big shot to get back into the game.
Shawn King added 12 points for Oral Roberts and Marchello Vealy finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 56.5 percent and held Oakland to 40 percent.
Derick Nelson led the Golden Grizzlies with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Jones finished with 15 points and nine assists.
Oakland was missing key reserve Brandon Cassise, who served the second game of an indefinite suspension for a violation of team policy. Oakland coach Greg Kampe said he wasn’t sure whether the senior would return.
