Murphy pulls in 19 points in Gamecocks’ win over Tenn. State
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP)—Nick Murphy scored 19 points to lead five Jacksonville State players in double-digits and help boost the Gamecocks to a 83-79 victory over Tennessee State on Saturday.
Will Ginn hit a 3-pointer with 10:07 to play to break a 56-56 tie and give the Gamecocks (4-12, 2-6 Ohio Valley Conference) the lead for good.
The Tigers (6-10, 3-4) never trailed by more than five in the final 10 minutes but couldn’t get closer than one in JSU’s second-straight win.
Murphy was 7-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line while Amadou Mbodji scored 18 on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.
J.J. Wesley contributed 16 points for the Gamecocks, followed by Jonathan Toles and Ginn with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Tennessee State’s Gerald Robinson led all scorers with 23 points, while Jerrell Houston added 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Jacksonville State opened the second half with a quick rally that built an eight-point lead by the 17:34 mark, but the Tigers battled back to tie at 49-49 with 13:43 to play.
They eventually pulled ahead at 56-55 with 10:58 on the clock.
Mbodji tied the game with 10:34 remaining and Ginn scored the 3-pointer that sealed the win.
