Robinson scores 17, leads Florida A&M to a 57-52 win over Howard
WASHINGTON (AP)—Leslie Robinson scored 17 points to lead Florida A&M to a 57-52 win against Howard on Saturday, the eighth-straight loss for the Bison.
Lamar Twitty scored 16 and Akini Akini scored all 12 of his points in the second half for Florida A&M (5-9, 1-1 MEAC).
Randy Hampton led the Bison with 13 points, and Paul Kirkpatrick had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Howard (3-12, 0-2 MEAC) hasn’t won since beating Navy 75-65 on Nov. 27.
Florida A&M held on despite giving Howard numerous opportunities for a tie or better in the final seconds.
Leading 55-50 with 22 seconds left, Florida A&M’s Joe Ballard missed two free throws. Howard’s Adam Walker hit two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to pull the Bison within three, and then the fun began.
An errant inbound pass gave the ball back to the Bison. Howard’s Kyle Riley missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 6 seconds left, and a jump ball on the rebound gave Howard yet another chance. But Eugene Myatt’s 3-point attempt with a second remaining was off-target, and two Robinson free throws sealed the game for the Rattlers.
Howard had been idle for two weeks before taking on the Rattlers, and for the first 30 minutes it seemed the losing streak was going to end. Howard opened the game with an 8-0 run over the first six minutes, and had a 32-22 lead at halftime.
However, Florida A&M went on an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 40-38, with about 10 minutes left. A few minutes later, a technical foul on Howard’s Kandi Mukole started a 8-0 Florida A&M run, giving the Rattlers a 51-42 lead.
