Mike Venezia leads Colgate to a 50-44 win over Army
HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP)—Mike Venezia scored 10 points to lead Colgate to a 50-44 win over Army in the Patriot League opener for both teams Saturday.
Kendall Chones added nine points for Colgate, and Kyle Roemer scored seven. Tyrell Thompson led Army with 10 points, followed by Jarell Brown with eight.
Alex Woodhouse had a game-high eight rebounds for the Raiders, while Doug Williams grabbed six for the Cadets.
Colgate shot 44.4 percent from the floor and went 4-of-17 from beyond the arc. Army was 40.9 percent from the floor and made 3-of-10 three-point tries.
Colgate (9-6, 1-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead on baskets by Daniel Waddy and Tim Pounds, and never looked back in the contest. The Raiders led by as many as 14 points in the first half and head a 28-18 halftime lead.
In the second half, Army (7-8, 0-1) cut the deficit to four points, 48-44, with 24 seconds left, but Ben Jonson’s layup with 18 seconds remaining sealed the win for the Raiders.
