Smith leads Stetson to 70-62 win over Fla. Gulf Coast
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP)—A.J. Smith scored 18 points to lead Stetson to a 70-62 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night.
Stetson (6-10, 2-1 Atlantic Sun Conference) built a 47-35 lead in the second half but the Eagles (5-11, 1-2) tied the game at 55-55 on guard Rob Quaintance’s long 3-pointer with just under 4 minutes left.
Stetson guard Mark Lohuis made three free throws and Garfield Blair connected on a three-point play to put the Hatters back up 61-55. The Eagles drew within 61-60 on Quaintance’s fifth 3-pointer, but Smith drove through the Fla. Gulf Coast defense for a layup.
After a Fla. Gulf Coast turnover, he hit two free throws with 34.6 seconds left.
Blair added 17 points for the Hatters.
Quaintance and Casey Wohlleb both scored 17 for Fla. Gulf Coast, who played their first conference home game in school history Friday.
