Nevels helps UCA to 70-68 OT win over Texas-Arlington
CONWAY, Ark. (AP)—Durrell Nevels made three foul shots in overtime Thursday night to give Central Arkansas a 70-68 victory over Texas-Arlington.
Texas-Arlington (10-4, 0-2 Southland Conference) led 34-29 at the half and was up 42-35 a little over 3 minutes into the second half.
But the Bears (11-4, 1-0) then went on a 9-0 run that put them up 44-42. UCA’s York Sims capped the streak with a 3-pointer followed by a dunk.
Sims scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half to help the Bears get a 64-63 lead with 32 seconds left in the game. The Mavericks’ Larry Posey sent the contest into overtime by making a free throw with 11 seconds remaining.
In the extra period, UCA’s Brian Marks put the Bears up 65-64 with a foul shot, but Roger Guignard got the lead back for UTA with a 3-pointer. Guignard led his team with 20 points.
UCA’s Marcus Pillow, who finished with 23 points, tied the game again at 67 with a jumper. Nevels then sank two free throws to put the Bears on top.
Rod Epps of UTA missed a free throw but made another to get the Mavericks within a point, but Nevels sank a shot from the line with a second remaining to finish with nine points.
Nate Bowie scored 12 points for the Bears.
