S.C.-Upstate beats Gardner-Webb for first ever Atlantic Sun win
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP)—Mezie Uzochukwu scored 14 points and had seven rebounds to help South Carolina Upstate to its first ever win in the Atlantic Sun Conference—a 73-59 victory Thursday night over Gardner-Webb.
The Spartans (3-13, 1-1) never trailed in the final 26 minutes of the game and put the game away with an 8-2 run to open the second half that put them ahead 39-30.
The Bulldogs (7-10, 1-2) trailed 50-41 with 8:28 to go, but S.C.-Upstate went on a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to take its biggest lead of the game at 66-45.
The Spartans shot 50 percent (29-of-58) from the field, compared to 36.4 percent (20-of-55) for Gardner-Webb.
Thomas Sanders scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.
Jeremy Byrd led the Spartans with 14 points, while Bobby Davis scored 13 points and nine rebounds and Luke Payne also had 13 points.
