James has 20 points as Wis.-Milwaukee beats Valpo 71-69
VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP)—Deion James scored 20 points as Wisconsin-Milwaukee outlasted Valparaiso for a 71-69 victory Thursday night in the Horizon League.
Trailing 64-61 with 1:40 left, James hit the game-tying 3-pointer and the Panthers took a 66-64 lead on a layup by Ricky Franklin. A free throw by James gave the Panthers (9-7, 4-2 Horizon) a 3-point edge with 21 seconds left.
Valpo’s Brandon McPherson, who finished with 15 points, hit a layup to draw the Crusaders (11-5, 2-2) within one with 14 seconds left. But Allan Hanson and Franklin sank two free throws apiece to make it 71-66 and McPherson’s 3-pointer with 2 seconds left narrowed it to the final 71-69.
Marcus Skinner finished with 13 points for the Panthers. Deonte Roberts had 12 and Paige Paulsen 11 as Wisconsin-Milwaukee shot 50 percent from the field.
Jarryd Loyd had 18 to lead Valparaiso, which led 38-34 at the break and shot 52.9 percent from the field. Urule Igbavboa and Shawn Huff had 11 each.
The Panthers outrebounded the Crusaders 27-25 and had 17 points off turnovers.
