Rams hang on to beat Georgia State 49-47
RICHMOND, Va. (AP)—Jamal Shuler scored 13 points and Virginia Commonwealth built an 8-point lead and held on Thursday night for a 49-47 victory against Georgia State.
Joey Rodriguez hit a 3-pointer with 2:47 left to give the Rams (10-4, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association) a 47-39 lead. After the Panthers (4-10, 1-3) scored five straight points, Shuler hit a driving jumper with 50 seconds left and the Rams hung on.
The final minutes made it surprisingly close.
Trea Goldston hit a field goal and Leonard Mendez converted a three-point play for Georgia State to make it 47-44 with 1:44 left. Mendez led the Panthers with 18 points.
Ousman Krubally hit the first of two free throws with 25.7 seconds left, and D.J. Jones’ tip-in with 15.6 to play produced the final score.
Shuler missed the front end of a one-and-one with 9.7 seconds left, but Goldston, who scored 11 points, missed a 3-point try at the buzzer.
The Panthers had two long stretches without field goals, going 8:44 in the first half and the first 6:57 of the second half as the Rams built a 13-point lead.
