Cal State Fullerton opens conference 3-0 with 78-64 win over Cal Poly
FULLERTON, Calif. (AP)—Josh Akognon scored 21 points to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 78-64 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Thursday night.
Junior Russell tied his career high of 16 points and Scott Cutley had 12 points for the Titans (10-4, 3-0 Big West), who began conference play with three consecutive victories for the first time since 1984.
Matt Hanson scored a career-high 22 points for the Mustangs (6-9, 1-2), who have lost four of five. Titus Shelton added 10 points and two blocks.
Leading 41-35, the Titans scored 14 points in a span of 3:42 to build a 55-35 advantage with 14:04 to play.
Cal Poly scored only two points, both on free throws, in the first 6:30 of the second half.
The Mustangs cut the lead to 69-64 with 2:45 left but Russell made a 3-pointer with 2:16 remaining, then Fullerton went 6-for-6 from the line in the final 43 seconds.
The Titans made their first nine shots, including seven from 3-point range, in taking a 31-21 lead in the first half. Cal Poly pulled to 37-33 at halftime.
