Bullock, Jackson lead Cleveland State past Detroit
DETROIT (AP)—J’Nathan Bullock and Cedric Jackson each scored 16 points Thursday and Cleveland State remained perfect in Horizon League play with its third straight victory, 74-64 over Detroit.
Jackson also had five assists for the Vikings (11-5, 4-0), who outscored the Titans 10-1 midway through the second half to take the lead for good. Cleveland State made 16 of its last 19 free throws to keep its hosts at bay.
Chris Hayes scored a career-high 17 points and Eulis Stephens added a career-best 16 to lead Detroit (4-11, 0-5). The Titans were playing their first game without head coach Perry Watson, who took a leave of absence Monday for an undisclosed medical condition. Assistant Kevin Mondro took his place on the bench.
Jon Goode also had 16 points for the Titans, who lost their ninth straight, their worst skid since the 1988-89 team dropped 12 in a row. Detroit also has lost five straight home games, one off the school record set by the 1947-48 team.
Detroit went on a 10-0 run midway through the first half and led by as many as 13 points. But Cleveland State outscored the Titans 8-2 in the final two minutes and trailed 31-29 at the break.
