Winthrop holds off well-traveled Presbyterian 55-48
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP)—Chris Gaynor and Michael Jenkins each scored 11 points to lead Winthrop to a 55-48 win over Presbyterian on Wednesday night.
The Eagles (9-6) led 50-48 in the final minute before a Taj McCullough dunk and free throw gave them a five-point lead. McCullough also had another dunk shortly before the buzzer.
The Blue Hose (2-20) were wrapping up a stretch of four games in five days. They are playing 25 road games in their first season in Division I and have not won one yet. Presbyterian is 2-0 at home.
Al’Lonzo Coleman led all scorers with 17 points and had six rebounds for Presbyterian, while Bryan Bostic added 10 points.
Despite the brutal schedule, the Blue Hose managed to eliminate a 12-point deficit midway through the second half with a 14-2 run that tied it at 46.
Charles Corbin hit a free throw and Gaynor followed with a 3-pointer to put Winthrop back ahead 50-46.
