Dorris leads Marshall in second-half rally over Rice, 66-47
HOUSTON (AP)—Mark Dorris scored 17 points to help Marshall come from behind to beat Rice 66-47 on Wednesday night.
Marshall trailed by as many as nine points late in the first half, but outscored Rice 37-14 in the second half en route to a win in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
The win snapped a five-game road losing streak for the Thundering Herd.
Dorris, who hit 3-of-6 3-pointers, led four players in double figures for the Herd (9-4, 1-0). Markel Humphrey, Matt Walls and Darryl Merthie each added 10.
The Owls (3-11, 0-1) got 10 points each from Suleiman Braimoh, Paulius Packevicius and Rodney Foster.
Dorris’ 3-pointer at 15:24 of the second half put Marshall in front for good, 40-39. Tyler Wilkinson hit six of his team’s next eight points to extend the Herd’s lead. Then, Marshall went on a 12-point run to go ahead 60-43 with about five minutes left.
Marshall hit only 3 of 12 3-pointers in the first half, but after trailing 33-29 at halftime, shot 5 of 8 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Rice turned the ball over 21 times, and Marshall took advantage, scoring 30 points off the miscues. The Owls did not score a bucket in the last 4:23 of the game.
