Hodges’s 21 points carries UMBC past Vermont, 78-60
CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP)—Brian Hodges scored 21 points, Darryl Proctor had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Maryland-Baltimore County beat Vermont 78-60 Wednesday night for its third straight victory.
Ray Barbosa added 16 points and Cavell Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds for the Retrievers (11-5, 3-0 America East). UMBC won for the second time in 11 all-time meetings with Vermont (6-9, 1-2).
Marqus Blakely led the Catamounts with 17 points. Mike Trimboli scored 12 points for Vermont, which saw its three-game winning streak halted.
The Retrievers are off to the best start in their 22-year Division I history.
UMBC opened the second half by hitting 10 of its first 13 shots and took a 56-38 lead on Matt Spadafora’s backdoor layup.
The Retrievers finished 18 for 27 from the floor in the second half and led by as many as 24 on Johnson’s short baseline jumper with 3:45 left in the game.
Spadafora had a left-side 3-pointer and a transition basket during an 13-2 run by UMBC, which held a 32-24 lead at halftime.
