Nivins scores 31 as St. Joseph’s beats UMass 98-92
AMHERST, Mass. (AP)—Ahmad Nivins had 31 points and 12 rebounds as St. Joseph’s held on for a 98-92 win over Massachusetts on Wednesday night.
The Hawks (8-4, 1-0 Atlantic 10) also got 21 points and 15 rebounds from Pat Calathes and 15 points from Darrin Govens as the team shot 59.7 percent from the field.
St. Joe’s led 71-54 with 13 minutes to play before UMass started pecking away. After Ettiene Brower converted a rebound and added three from the line, the Minutemen had narrowed the margin to six at 83-77.
But Nivins countered with a hoop and Pat Calathes made a pair of free throws and the Minutemen never came any closer. Ricky Harris was high for UMass (11-4, 0-1 Atlantic 10) with 25 points, 14 in the first half. Gary Forbes finished with 22.
St. Joseph’s shot a torrid 66.7 percent from the field in the first half, leading 52-44 at the break.
