Drake beats Indiana State 75-50 for 12th straight win
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)—Jonathan Cox scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help Drake tie a school record with its 12th straight victory, 75-50 over Indiana State on Wednesday night.
Leonard Houston added 15 points for the Bulldogs (13-1, 4-0 Missouri Valley Conference), who continued the best start in school history. Picked to finish ninth in the league, the Bulldogs now are one of two MVC teams still unbeaten in conference play.
Illinois State also is 4-0.
Indiana State (8-6, 3-1) had won four straight and was coming off an 18-point victory over Northern Iowa. But the Sycamores shot only 29 percent, were outrebounded 39-25 and couldn’t muster much scoring beyond Harry Marshall (16 points) and Marico Stinson (15).
Drake matched the 12-game winning streak posted by the 1968-69 team, which reached the Final Four, and will go for No. 13 against Missouri State at home on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs played the final 17:10 without Josh Young, the MVC’s leading scorer. Young left the game with an apparent injury to his right ankle when he slid into the basket support after being fouled.
He finished with seven points, 10 below his average. But Cox helped take up the slack, shooting 6-for-8, matching his career high in rebounds and adding two steals. Adam Emmenecker helped out with nine points, five assists and two steals.
Drake shot 60 percent in building a 41-27 halftime lead and never let the Sycamores get closer than 11 in the second half.
Indiana State drew to 51-38 with a 6-0 run, then managed only two baskets over the next 10:22 and Drake built its lead to 72-44. John Michael Hall finished that surge with a 3-pointer and a dunk.
