Bennett leads South Alabama to 65-61 win over W. Kentucky
MOBILE, Ala. (AP)—Demetric Bennett scored 17 points and South Alabama held on to beat Western Kentucky 65-61 on Saturday night, its eighth straight victory.
Neither team led by more than six points in a game featuring the two teams picked to finish atop the Eastern Division in the Sun Belt Conference. It was tied at 29 at the half after six ties and six lead changes.
Ronald Douglas added 15 points for South Alabama (12-3, 4-0), while Brandon Davis scored 11 of his 13 in the first half.
Courtney Lee and Tyrone Brazelton scored 20 each to lead Western Kentucky (10-5, 2-1).
South Alabama scored the first four points out of halftime, but Western Kentucky pulled even. When the Jaguars scored five more to edge ahead, Bennett hit a 3-pointer and Douglas followed with a tip-in to knot it again.
It was tied at 45 when South Alabama finally pulled ahead for good. Daon Merritt hit a pair of free throws with 7:17 left, DeAndre Coleman put back an offensive rebound and Davis’s dunk finished off the spurt.
