Goins rallies Arkansas-Pine Bluff past MVSU 60-56

ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP)—Larry Williams scored seven of his 21 points during a decisive run as Arkansas-Pine Bluff beat Mississippi Valley State 60-56 on Saturday night.

William Byrd had 16 points and Marcelle Goins finished the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams with 13 for the Lions (5-7, 1-0), who wiped away a 14-point halftime deficit to win.

The Delta Devils (2-10, 0-1) led 35-21 at halftime, but were run down by the Lions midway through the second half. Arkansas-Pine Bluff trailed 48-39 with about 9 minutes to go, but went on a 17-0 run to take a 56-48 lead that secured the win with 2:20 left. Williams had two layups and a 3-pointer in the run.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff shot just 28 percent in the first half, but fed its rally with 59.1 percent shooting in the first half.

The Delta Devils shot 32 percent in the pivotal second half, missing all seven 3-point attempts.

Stanford Speech scored 20 for MVSU, while Chris Watson added 12 and Carl Lucas had 10.
