Akognon’s 22 points help Fullerton down UC Irvine, 93-83
FULLERTON, Calif. (AP)—Josh Akognon scored 22 points and Frank Robinson had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 93-83 victory over UC Irvine on Friday night.
Marcus Crenshaw added 16 points off the bench for the Titans (8-4, 1-0 Big West), who shot a season-best 61.5 percent and have won four of their past six games.
Patrick Sanders scored a career-high 27 points for the Anteaters (5-9, 0-1), who have lost four of five. Darren Fells added 16 points and eight rebounds and Brett Lauer had 12 points.
Irvine, which trailed by 10 points early in the first half, forced a 52-52 tie with 15:49 to play. But Robinson and Scott Cutley each scored four points during a 10-0 surge that put Fullerton ahead 62-52 with 13:08 remaining.
Marcus McIntosh made two free throws and Lauer made a 3-point basket to narrow the Anteaters’ deficit to 62-57. But Crenshaw scored five points on jump shots in a span of 1:21 to extend the Titans’ lead to 67-57 with 9:36 left.
Fullerton led by as many as 15 points.
