Oakland, Mich. edges S. Dakota St. 73-72
BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP)—Brandon Cassise’s basket with 15 seconds remaining Thursday lifted Oakland University to a 73-72 Summit League men’s basketball victory over South Dakota State.
Cassise scored seven of the Golden Grizzlies’ last nine points.
It was the third straight heartbreaking loss for the Jackrabbits (5-9, 0-3), who dropped back-to-back overtime games last weekend in California. SDSU led late in all three games.
Against Oakland (7-7, 2-1), the Jackrabbits took a 72-71 lead on a 3-pointer by Clint Sargent with 28 seconds to play.
The Golden Grizzlies led 37-36 at halftime and maintained the lead until Garrett Callahan gave SDSU a 64-61 lead on his third 3-pointer with 4:24 left. It was the first of four lead changes down the stretch.
Tim Williams led Oakland with 19 points and six rebounds in his first career start. Derick Nelson added 15 points, Johnathon Jones 14 and Erik Kangas 13.
Callahan had 15 points before fouling out late in the game. Mohamed Berte was 7-for-7 for 15 points off the bench for SDSU. Ben Beran had 11 points.
SDSU’s bench outscored Oakland 28-12 and outrebounded the Golden Grizzlies 36-27. But the Jackrabbits had 17 turnovers to just seven by Oakland.
