Belmont holds on for 87-84 victory
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP)—Will Peeples scored 20 points and Belmont squandered a 16-point second-half lead before rallying back to beat Gardner-Webb, 87-84, on Thursday night.
Thomas Sanders’ attempt to tie the game at the buzzer for Gardner-Webb was just off the rim and Belmont (9-6) won the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams.
Justin Hare scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half for Belmont.
Sanders led Gardner-Webb with a season-high 27 points. He also pulled down 12 rebounds for his ninth game this year with double figure points and ebounds.
Belmont took control early with a 21-3 run to go up 26-15. Belmont eventually stretcheding things to 60-44 on Keaton Belcher’s 3-pointer withi 15:23 to go.
However, Gardner-Webb used a 28-11 run to go ahead 72-71 on Grayson Flittner’s long 3-pointer.
Hare tied the game for Belmont, 76-all, with a 3-pointer of his own.
Gardner-Webb took its last lead, 83-82, before Belmont pulled away for victory.
Sanders’ last-ditch try from the left corner missed off the side of the rim.
