S. Utah gets first home win in a 73-60 victory over W. Illinois
CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP)—Davis Baker scored 20 points and Geoff Payne added 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern Utah to a 73-60 Summit League win over Western Illinois on Thursday night.
The Thunderbirds (4-10, 2-1 Summit) won at home for the first time this year.
David Jackson led Western Illinois (5-8, 0-2) with 17 points. Jerryck Owens-Murrey and David Nurse scored 12 and 10 points respectively.
Southern Utah shot 50 percent from the field and 43 percent from 3-point range in the decisive first half.
Trailing 38-19, Western Illinois used a 13-5 run to open the second half and closed the gap to 11 points.
The Thunderbirds responded with an 11-2 spurt behind a Marek 3-pointer from the right wing and a couple fastbreak points.
Southern Utah took control in the game’s first 10 minutes with a 17-4 run that included consecutive 3-pointers by Baker and Marek.
