Gilchrese helps New Hampshire stave off Albany 75-66
DURHAM, N.H. (AP)—Eric Gilchrese hit a key 3-point play and then added five more free throws in the final 58 seconds to help New Hampshire hold off Albany 75-66 and snap a seven-game losing streak Thursday night.
Gilchrese finished with 18 points and Tyrece Gibbs had 19 to lead the Wildcats (4-8), who won their first America East conference opener since 1997. Mike Christensen added 16 points and Albin Abreu 14.
Brian Lillis had 14 points and Brian Connolly 12 for the defending conference champion Great Danes (5-8).
With Albany leading 54-53, Abreu hit a 3-pointer that sparked a 17-5 run and put the Wildcats up for good.
Gilchrese sealed the game when he missed the first of a 1-and-1, but grabbed his own rebound, put the ball in off the glass and got fouled. He hit the free throw to put New Hampshire up 65-58 with 58 seconds left, and added five more in the final seconds.
Albany led 53-47 with seven minutes left, but Abreu and Gibbs drilled consecutive 3s to tie the game with 5:55 left. ^
