Holmes’ late 3-pointer lifts VMI over Mercer
MACON, Ga. (AP)—Chavis Holmes scored 14 points in less than two minutes, capped by a game-winning 3-pointer with 5 seconds left to lift VMI to a 102-99 victory over Mercer on Wednesday.
The Keydets (7-6) took an 82-76 lead with 7:18 left in the game on a jumper by Reggie Williams, who finished with a team-leading with 29 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had four steals.
The Bears (5-8) went on an 18-8 run over the next five minutes, taking a 94-88 lead on Brian Mills’ free throw. Shaddean Aaron scored 10 points for Mercer while James Florence hit twice from beyond the arc during the spurt.
But Holmes, who finished with 24 points, scored his team’s last 14 points in the last 1:40. He made three 3-pointers, a layup and three free throws during the 13-5 run.
Travis Holmes scored 22 points and Austin Kenon added 15 for the Keydets.
Aaron had a game high 30 points for the Bears, while Florence had 18 points and seven rebounds. Brian Pfohl scored 17 points for Mercer and Calvin Henry added 11.
