James’ layup at the buzzer gives JMU 62-61 win over VCU
HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP)—Juwann James hit a layup at the buzzer to lift James Madison to a 62-61 win over Virginia Commonwealth Wednesday night.
James hit a pair of free throws with 58 seconds remaining to give the Dukes a 60-59 lead. VCU’s Eric Maynor missed a jumper but got the rebound and called a timeout to set up the play with 28 seconds left. Jamal Shuler’s jumper with 10 seconds left put the Rams up by one.
Abdulai Jalloh led James Madison (9-3, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association) with 17 points. Pierre Curtis added 11 points, and James scored 10.
Maynor had 23 points for VCU (8-4, 1-1). Will Fameni added 11.
James Madison led 30-29 at halftime. The Dukes outrebounded VCU 39-22 and outscored the Rams 14-2 in second-chance points.
