Sumner leads William & Mary to 71-50 victory over Fairfield
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP)—Danny Sumner scored 13 points to lead William and Mary to a 71-50 victory over Fairfield on Monday.
Three-point baskets by both teams dominated the start of the first half, as the Tribe scored its first 15 points off the long-range jumper. Nine of the Stags’ first 15 points came on 3-pointers. The lead changed hands three times before Sumner hit a pair of free throws with 8:45 left in the first half to put William and Mary (4-7) ahead for good.
The Tribe broke open a close game with an 18-7 run over four and a half minutes in the second half, taking a 54-38 lead with 12:16 left.
Chris Darnell and Nathan Mann each added 12 points for the Tribe.
Greg Nero led Fairfield (3-9) with 12 points and six rebounds, and Jonathan Han added 11 points.
Fairfield outrebounded William and Mary 39-36, but came up short in shooting, hitting just 28 percent of its field goal attempts to William and Mary’s 46 percent.
