Shubik basket secures Sacred Heart win over Holy Cross, 61-58
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP)—Drew Shubik hit a 15-footer with 21 seconds left to secure Sacred Heart’s 61-58 win over Holy Cross on Sunday.
Crusaders’ Colin Cunningham scored on a baseline drive to make it 59-58 with 1:27 left, leaving the Pioneers clinging to a one-point lead.
Sacred Heart’s Chauncey Hardy tapped his missed shot out to Shubik, who ran down the 35-second shot clock before hitting a pull-up jumper for the final points of the game.
The Pioneers’ Ryon Howard deflected a 3-pointer by the Adam May of Holy Cross just before the final buzzer to preserve the victory.
Luke Granato, who hit 6-of-10 3-pointers, led Sacred Heart (5-8) with a season-high 18 points. Shubik had 11 points and Hardy and Ryan Litke 10 each for the Pioneers, who have won five of their last seven games after an 0-6 start.
Center Tim Clifford topped Holy Cross (7-3) with 24 points and seven rebounds. Cunningham had 10 points as the Crusaders, who led by as much as six in the second half, suffered their second straight loss.
Sacred Heart opened its biggest lead on a 3-pointer by Granato that gave the Pioneers a 22-13 edge, but the Crusaders used a 16-6 run to move in front 29-28 at halftime.
