Mullins leads Southern Illinois to 79-71 win over Missouri State
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP)—Bryan Mullins scored 19 points to lead Southern Illinois to a 79-71 victory over Missouri State on Sunday.
Five players scored in double figures for Southern Illinois (6-6), which carried a losing record into Missouri Valley Conference play for the first time since the 1986-87 season.
Josh Bone added 17 points, Randal Falker had 13 points, and Wesley Clemmons and Tony Boyle each scored 11 points for the Salukis.
Southern Illinois coach Chris Lowery said after Friday’s 57-55 loss to No. 16 Butler that the Salukis needed to hit free-throws. Southern Illinois shot 10-for-10 from the line in the last minute of play Sunday and 26-for-32 for the game.
The Salukis appeared to be in danger early when Missouri State (7-6) scored four 3-pointers in the first seven minutes to jump out to a 16-9 lead, their largest of the game. But 3-pointers by Mullins and Bone, along with a jump shot by Carlton Fay tied the game and the Salukis rolled from there.
Deven Mitchell had a game-high 23 points for Missouri State. Justin Fuehrmeyer added 19 points and Dale Lamberth chipped in 13 for the Bears.
