Roberts scores 16 as SMU hangs on to beat Texas State 77-70
DALLAS (AP)—Derrick Roberts scored 16 points and SMU survived a second-half comeback to beat Texas State 77-70 on Saturday.
Roberts made all eight of his free throws and added four steals and three assists to lead the Mustangs (6-5) to their sixth win in seven games after an 0-4 start.
Ryan Harp (14 points, nine rebounds) and Bamba Fall (15 points) led a strong bench effort for SMU, which had five players in double figures.
Brandon Bush led Texas State (6-5) with 21 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Brent Benson came off the bench to score 19 for the Bobcats.
The Mustangs held Texas State to 24 percent shooting while building a 37-23 halftime lead. But the Bobcats improved to 45 percent and outscored SMU 47-40 in the second half.
