Massachusetts holds off a late rally to beat BU 70-61
AMHERST, Mass. (AP)—Gary Forbes had 25 points and 13 rebounds as Massachusetts held off a late rally by Boston University for a 70-61 win on Saturday night.
Boston University (3-8), which trailed by as many as 23 points in the first half, went on a 9-0 run late in the game to pull within 62-59 on Carlos Strong’s layup with 1:31 to play.
Chris Lowe hit a jumper and a pair of free throws to put the Minutemen (10-2) up 66-59 with 57 seconds to play and help them secure their fifth consecutive win. The Terriers scored just one more basket in the final minute.
Ricky Harris had 16 points for the Minutemen and Lowe finished with 14.
Strong led the Terriers with 17 and Corey Lowe added 13. Scott Brittain had a team-high 10 rebounds.
It took BU almost seven minutes to score its first basket, but after Ibrahim Konate made a tip-in, the Terriers went on a 7-0 run to pull within 11-8.
UMass, behind the shooting of Forbes and Lowe, pulled ahead 40-17 and led 44-25 at halftime.
