Lyons, Murphy lead Norfolk in win over Jacksonville State
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP)—Corey Lyons scored 21 points and Tony Murphy added 19 to help Norfolk State snap a four-game losing streak in a 76-72 win over Jacksonville State on Saturday.
The Spartans (3-8) went on a 12-1 run in the first half before taking a 33-27 halftime lead. They claimed their first double-digit lead in the second half at 39-28 on a put back by Larry Vickers, who scored 12 points.
Corey Lyons, who finished with 12 points, scored on a fastbreak layup with 9:44 left to give Norfolk State a 60-40 lead. The Gamecocks (2-10) answered by making four of their nine 3-pointers over the next six minutes to cut the lead to four points.
But the Spartans pulled away down the stretch, hitting 9-of-11 shots from the free throw line. Murphy, who shot 9-of-10 from the line, grabbed six rebounds, had three assists and five steals for Norfolk State.
Jacksonville State guard Nick Murphy had a team-leading 17 points and 10 rebounds. Will Ginn and J.J. Wesley scored 14 points apiece, while Amadou Mbodji added 10 for the Gamecocks who have lost seven straight games.
